Finding Free Public Domain Content Online by Michael Hopkins
With so much talk of the
so-called
lost files, I felt it timely to remind you
that there are a few great sources of copyright-free, public domain content
available on the Internet.
Visit the resources below and search for texts that deal
with your own area of expertise and you'll find lots of stuff that you can
either sell directly or use as content for your websites or ebooks.
The textbooks on this site are all released
under an open content license that means that they are free forever. No
one can keep you from using these materials, modifying them or
distributing them. Also, the license guarantees that any works that are
derived from these materials will be similarly free to modify and
distribute, forever.
In the licence agreement
page it says...
The purpose of this License is to make a manual,
textbook, or other functional and useful document “free” in the sense of
freedom: to assure everyone the effective freedom to copy and
redistribute it, with or without modifying it, either commercially or
noncommercially.
Note that they specify that the texts are 'free' as in
freedom rather than 'free' as in no money. To further reinforce this point,
they say you have the "freedom to copy and redistribute it...with or without
modifying it...commercially or noncommercially".
In short, you can sell it, modify it, give it away for
free or whatever else you want to do!
Some areas are better developed than others but it's
growing all the time. Definitely one to add to your Favorites.
Another resource from the same people is
WikiSource which is "a repository of primary source texts"
and
WikiMedia which is "a central repository for free images, music,
sound and video clips".
"most of the Project Gutenberg
eBooks are older literary works that are in the public domain in the
United States. All may be freely downloaded and read, and redistributed
for non-commercial use".
They say "non-commercial use" but the reality is, once
the text in question is in the public domain, you CAN distribute it
commercially (sell it) if you wish. However, to do so you need to remove the
Project Gutenberg trademark and licence agreement
from the text.
Once you've done that you're left with a copyright-free
text that you can sell, give away, use for website content, and so on.
Be aware, they say that not ALL the books on the site are
copyright-free and be aware also that a copyright may exist in countries
outside the US. See
this page for
some more details.

Many (but not all) of the books listed in this searchable
database are in the public domain. You'll find an overview of the conditions
a text must meet to be included in their database on
this page.
Use this search engine from the US copyright office to
determine if a work is under copyright or not. If you're from outside the
US, run a search on Google (or visit your government's website), to see if
you have an equivalent resource for your own country.
And that's it!
Thanks again for visiting this page and for reading all the way to here.
